CAT– Common Admission Test is a management entrance test for the candidates aspiring to make a career in business administration and management. Conducted by the Indian Institute of Management, the test aims at ascertaining the skills and ability of the entrants in order to make them eligible for admission in the top management institutes of India. Plus, this exam evaluates the presence of mind of the candidates during crisis situations.

Why Take Cat Exam?
The CAT exam 2018is designed to evaluate the student’s efficiency and to determine whether he/she is suitable for the management course. The test opens the opportunities for the aspirants to get admission in the Premium Business schools picked by top companies that offer lucrative salary packages. The students of these top colleges are given high priority not only by the Indian companies but also by the foreign corporations.
Eligibility for CAT Exam
A candidate is eligible for the CAT examination only if he/she fulfills the following criteria’s-
- He/she should be a graduate with a minimum score of 50% marks. In case of aspirants belonging Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Caste and to Differently Able category the minimum eligibility score is 45%.
- The Bachelor’s degree should be awarded by any State or Central affiliated University or by any educational institution incorporated by an act of Parliament or which is deemed as a University under the UGC Act, 1956 or the aspiring candidate should have some equivalent qualification which is acknowledged by the Ministry of Human Resource Department, Government of India.
- Candidates who are appearing or have appeared in the final year examination of bachelor’s degree and are waiting for the results are also eligible for CAT exam. The same is applicable for the students with equivalent qualification examination. In this case, the candidates can join the provisional program, only if they submit a certificate issued by the Registrar/Principal of their Institute/College by June 30, 2018. The certificate should state that the student has successfully completed all the requirements necessary to the bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification.
Note– The eligibility of the candidate is verified at different level of the selection process by the IIM’s. Hence, the candidates should gather all the required details from the official website- www.iimcat.ac.in.
CAT Exam Duration
The duration of CAT exam is 3 hours duration; 1 hour for each section. The candidates are required to complete each section of the paper in the in the designated one hour. While attempting one section, they can’t attempt other sections. This means they won’t have the liberty to complete the paper in their preferred order.
CAT Exam Syllabus 2018
CAT Exam isn’t an easy nut to crack. The candidates can secure good marks only with right strategic approach and extensive preparation. They need to have thorough knowledge of the CAT syllabus before strategizing their exam planning. The entrance exam includes three sections. The syllabus of each is briefed below-
Quantitative Aptitude Syllabus-This is the first section of the CAT examination. Its questions include Moderate Secondary Problems and other complex questions. The major topics of the Syllabus are Geometry, Mensuration, Commercial mathematics, Arithematics, Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus. 1667256
Verbal Reasoning and Reading Comprehension Syllabus– The questions included in this section are from English language. The applicants appearing must have in-depth understanding of the language. The major sections of the Verbal Ability Syllabus comprise of Word usage, Sentence Correction, Verbal Logic, Grammar Correction, Vocabulary, Para Jumble, Fill in the blanks, Fact Inference Judgement, and Para completion.
Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation Syllabus– This one can be considered as the most interesting section of the CAT test. In order to score well in this section the candidates should be proficient in analytical thinking and reasoning aptitude. It evaluates the logical approach of the candidate. The questions included in this section are related to Seating Arrangement, Venn Diagram, Syllogism, Puzzels, Propositions, Set Theory and Para-jumbles. The Logical Reasoning section is followed by the Data interpretation section that includes data analysis and sufficiency questions.
Pattern For CAT 2018
Ø The CAT examination paper includes both Non-MCQ and MCQ questions.
Ø The candidate scores 3 Marks for every correct answer and loses -1 marks for every wrong answer.
Ø As mentioned earlier the paper will be divided into three sections- (A)- Quantitative Ability (B)- Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation (C)- Verbal Reasoning and Reading Comprehension
Ø The paper will contain total 100 questions. Quantitative Ability and Verbal Reasoning and Reading Comprehension sections will have 34 questions each, while Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation will have 32 questions.
Ø Candidates will be given 60 minutes to complete section (which makes 180 minutes in total).
Ø The paper will also include descriptive questions.
Ø Expected cut off for each section is 33%-40%.
CAT 2018 Exam Fees
The registration fee for NC/OBC and general category candidates is Rs.1600/. For the candidates belonging to SC/ST or disability category the sum is Rs.800/. The candidates are required to send the CAT exam fees 2018 through the official website and not by any other means.

CAT Application Form 2018
The applications for CAT 2016 opened on August 8, 2016. All the applicants need to submit their applications through the official portal for appearing in CAT 2016. The following process need to be followed for filling CAT exam form 2018–
- Registration on the official website
- Filling application form- the candidate need to provide personal details, academic details, contact information, program preference, exam centre preference and work experience.
- Uploading the documents (scanned copies)- Signature, Photograph, disability certificate ( in case of specially abled candidates) and Category certificate.
- Paying application fee.

It is high time to get into the studies and solve as many mock papers as possible. In order to secure good marks the candidates need to follow an organized study and strategize their preparation. Here is how you can ensure effective CAT Study Plan-
ü Focus on the basics- If your basics aren’t clear don’t expect any good out of your preparation. In order to crack CAT, candidates should focus on the reading basics of all the topics included in the syllabus. Focus on Venn Diagrams, Number Systems, Data Interpretation, and Reading News Papers. Brush up your Grammatical Skills.
ü Study From Standard Text Books – The choice of study material affects the CAT preparation to a great extent. Do not settle over several reference books. It is wise to use only reference book for Verbal Ability, Quantitative Aptitude, and Data Interpretation. You may use any number of Question banks and Mock papers.
ü Attempt Mock Tests- This will give you a good practise of solving the paper. Moreover, you will get a good idea about the format of paper and the level of questions that are asked in CAT examination.
ü Relaxation is Equally Important- Indulge yourself in recreational activities. Don’t convert yourself into a bookworm. Best preparation can assured by maintaining a balance between studies and leisure life. However, this may be somewhat difficult for the working candidates. But where there is a will there is a way.
ü Create a Timetableand Follow it Strictly- Stick to your schedule or else you may lose.
CAT 2018 Cut offs for each section
To qualify the CAT examination candidates are required to secure a minimum mark in every section along with minimum overall marks. The cut-off for each section depends on difficulty level of the section (the calculation is done by comparing the difficulty level of a section with the other sections). To earn group discussion and personal interview calls from reputed IIM’s a candidate is required to secure a minimum total mark for the entire CAT paper.
Note– The cut-off rate used by IIMs to offer calls varies from one institute to the other.
Group Discussion and Personal Interview
This is the last part of the selection process. The applicants who successfully secure the minimum marks (both in sectional cut-offs and overall cut-offs) are called for group discussion and personal interview. The candidates need to prepare themselves for clearing this ultimate stage.
